In the Bible, "sentries," or watchmen, were individuals stationed on city wall or in tower to guard against approaching dangers like the enemy. The concept of a watchman extended metaphorically to include prophets and faithful preachers who warned people of spiritual dangers and offered guidance, as well as holy beings referred to as "sentinel" angels in the book of Daniel.
